Welcome to AICRO-Uganda, an NGO committed to supporting vulnerable communities in Uganda. Established in 2014 as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) and registered as an NGO in 2017, we focus on community service, climate resilience, poverty alleviation, and local capacity building. Join us in our mission to create a brighter and more resilient future for Uganda’s rural communities.
We deeply value community service, driven by our founders' strong belief in collective action. We actively engage with and support local communities in Uganda.
Our focus on climate resilience reflects our commitment to addressing environmental challenges and helping communities adapt to a changing climate, especially in agriculture.
Our core mission is to alleviate poverty. We work to improve the economic well-being of vulnerable women and youth in impoverished rural communities across Uganda.
We are dedicated to building local capacity. Our goal is to empower communities with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need for self-sufficiency and sustainable development.
Due to increasing population pressures, natural resources are disappearing at an exponential rate. Uganda has one of the highest birth rates in the world, meaning we have significantly more mouths to feed. This pressure to provide food to the growing population is meted onto natural resources in search of land to grow crops and alternative livelihoods that rely on the extraction of natural resources.
Rwenzori was once known as East Africa’s food basket. However, due to climatic change and regional market demands, food is in short supply leading to an increase in food prices that impacts the poor. This ultimately leads to malnutrition – a condition that 42% of children under the age of 5 experience.
Social inequalities mainly consist of exclusion based on gender and age – especially among the youth. More notably, Uganda still registers high cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and low participation of women and youth in governance and household economics. Youth unemployment is equally on the rise, as employment options are still very limited.
Currently, Uganda is hosting more than 1.5 million refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, and Burundi. There are environmental and sociocultural pressures associated with the hosting of refugees requiring developmental, economic, and political solutions.
